Audio Reconnaissance: ARTISTS
AMTRAK - IDM /instrumental / electronic
Amtrak hails from a mysterious and unknown location in KY. In his lair he creates "make your neck snap" grooves lush dense soundscapes and genius arrangments. His new ep "In Transit" combines it all into a focused and moving vision of where music is going.
In Transit-available March 4th 2008
DREADNOTS - experimental Hip-Hop
The Dreadnots are a Pittsburgh Pennsylvania sample-based beat and vocal driven outfit that apply experimentation heavily in their sounds. Simultaneously tapping into the elements of hip-hop, noise rock, 60’s psych, improvised/ambient music, and lo-fi songwriting, they create an unpredictable take on new school avant electronic music. Formed in 2000, they’ve released a heap of limited edition cdr’s, tapes, floppy discs, and vcd’s, along with a pressed cd, on various homespun d.i.y. labels around PA. Their songs are built on non-linear variations: found sounds, am and shortwave radio squelches, gritty hip-hop sampling, effected turntable scratching, dark drum programming, and skronky guitar blasts all blend together at different times, interspersed with calculated rhyming. Live, their use of fucked up instrumentation in the context of continually evolving and open-ended sets have allowed them the freedom to scramble genres, while at the same time perplexing those that put hip-hop in a box. This is outsider music for the inside of yr head. DreadNot Nor Fear Them...
Id Obelus - Hip-Hop / alternative
Id Obelus is an independent M.C. hailing from Winamac, a rural community in Indiana. Like many who grew up in the mid-eighties (whenYo! MTV Raps first aired on our idiot boxes), Id fell in love with rap music and hastily began honing his own skills. Decades of fiendish music ingestion, diligent writing, and obsessive recording have molded him into the prolific artist he is today. Id Obelus’ distinct nasal flow and free association writing style usually comes equip with an underlying message. His quirky and often rapid-fire delivery sets him apart from the multitudes of ordinary rappers out today. He is an affiliate of the Dreadnots, a collective of genre-defying artists based in Pittsburgh, PA.
Although Id has been selling DIY material for years via cassette and CDR, his first professionally pressed full length CD entitled flyourfavorite released on Sept. 25, 2007 is available now.

MOTIF - IDM/HIP-HOP/experimental electronic
people dream in vivid surreal colors, Motif dreams in reversed pianos with low murmuring strings held together by dense rhythms. Sometimes resulting in flashes of digital ash, yet occasionally beauty and calm rises like waves upon
a beach. All the while rhythms and beats keep the tempo, only to fold away stuttering in reverse coughing back into time just to twist n’ turn over again back in sync. Voices or what sounds like words seep in and out revealing a message that may take moments or decades to unravel into context and meaning. It’s only then a realization occurs…this is a dream. Does it all have some deeper meaning, or is my mind just playing tricks on me.

Twilight Sentinels - Hip-Hop
When hearing the music of Twilight Sentinels, it’s easy to mentally wander back to the “Golden Era” of hip-hop. They have adopted the sentiment from the “true school” while incorporating the originality and artistry that cannot be mistaken. Twilight Sentinels have a foundation on what it takes to be a respected hip-hop group. The ingredients include no egos, no bullshit and no attitudes, allowing the group to dictate their own sound and style and oppose the force-fed monotony which has run rampant in today’s music marketplace. Their 100% sample based instrumentation is a refreshing departure from the keyboard sonics and synth drums of present-day rap music.
Based out of Indianapolis, IN, this group consists of Joe Harvey (Sektion 31), Mic L. Night, (Mab Lab, People Vs. Radio )and DJ Topspeed (Scribble Jam, Animal Crackers). These three seasoned veterans hit the stage with a dynamic presence and a carefully crafted set with the intent of delivering an unforgettable performance. They have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with industry legends like The Roots, De La Soul and Kool Keith along with underground mainstays Gift of Gab, Lateef the Truth Speaker, Ohmega Watts, The Perceptionists, Cunninlynguists and Mac Lethal just to name a few.

Mike Milligan & Steam Shovel - Blues
From Kokomo, Indiana, Mike began playing guitar in 1977 at age 6. Mike grew up hearing his father's soul-rock bands. As a boy, he traveled with them and the Drifters in the mid 1970's throughout the southern United States. He recieved his first guitar at age 5. He purchased his first electric guitar at age 10 with paper route money. His vocals and guitar have been called "gritty and soulful" and have been compare to many. He formed Steam Shovel in the Summer of 1993 and named the band after his favorite childrens book by Viginia Lee Burton, "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel". "My mom bought the book for me from a garage sale when I was a boy. Recently, I've contacted the author's children, who are in their 70's, and they were delighted to see what the band's been doing. They also put a copy of "All My Life" in the National Library of Congress along side their mother's books", Mike said.
Its seems that Mike writes music that is appreciated and enjoyed by all ages. You may catch him performing with the band or solo electric, acoustic 12 string, or National steel, at a Blues Sunday School, an elementary or high school, and then at a venue that night, always sharing the music...
Mike cites his father, "Big" Mike, Robert Cray, Tad Robinson, Howling Wolf, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Doyle Bramhall (1 and 2), Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Donny Hathaway Jimi Hendrix, Albert King and Collins.(get the picture?) as his mentors.
Mike formed Steam Shovel in the summer of 1993, and has performed with/opened for: The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Buddy Guy, Sam Lay, W.C. Clark, Lonnie Brooks, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Tad Robinson, Joe Bonamassa, Chris Duarte, BB King, and was named "Best Blues Band in Indiana" in 2002 @ The Slippery Noodle Inn by the Crossroads Blues Society of indiana!
Born January 15,1975, in Kokomo, Indiana, Shaun has been playing bass since 1990 and is one of the best players around. Shaun has been "filling" in and "sitting" in with Steam Shovel since its formation in 1993. He loves jamming with his little boy, Raven Patrick, who is one heck of a drummer for just over 3 feet tall and 3 years old (he's a James Brown fan too!) Shaun's playing style is solid, funky, and soulful. Shaun really admires Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, and Jaco Pastorius... (what bassist doesn't?!) Whether he's playing 4 string electric or acoustic bass, Shaun can really hold down the "groove" and make you move, and if you're not careful, "rattle the breading off of your corndog!".-says a vendor at the Indiana State Fair-2003!
Shaun Milligan
Shaun plays Fender Jazz basses, Warwicks, and most often, his Fodera Vic Wooten model (pictured above). He uses David Eden amps (most of the time).and SIT Strings.
Robert "Tiny" Cook
(AKA: "Mr December")
Robert “Tiny” Cook, from Connersville, Indiana, born March 6, 1967, has been involved in music all of his life.
